Making a pivot in your business (whether it’s niching down, changing up your services, offerings, or otherwise) can seem scary and overwhelming af, but it doesn’t have to be! After pivoting 3x myself and helping dozens of my clients make the shift as well, I’m excited to be sharing some insight to help you through a smooth-sailing pivot.
You might know the importance of pivoting your business and have the desire to do it, but not know where to start. Or you may feel like it’s unattainable for you.
But, my goal is to ease your mind and help get you started if you’ve been on the fence!
I promise you’ve got this and it’s not as scary as it seems.
I got my start in social media management at a young age, working for an e-commerce jewelry company. In time I moved on to work for other small businesses and then to being on social media teams for nonprofits. By the time I was a couple of years into college, I had worked up to social media management at a corporate level- working with big corporations I never thought I’d be offered opportunities with.
I was putting in a wild amount of time and effort, for just over minimum wage. So, I made the choice to ditch my college degree and start my own business. But, I wasn’t a business mentor at first. I was a social media and Pinterest manager. I was doing great for myself but still didn’t feel completely fulfilled and felt the call to embody my full potential, as well as dealing with burnout on the horizon.
That’s when I made the choice to pivot into coaching.
I invested in a business coach for myself to assist with this big transition and it was well worth the investment.
Plus, by having already built up my social media management business over the years, I was able to ensure recurring income for myself while I made this pivot, before phasing out my management clients completely.
I have not once regretted my decision to pivot into coaching. I now run a passion-driven, extremely successful, human-first business that I absolutely adore.
The work that I do with my clients allows them to achieve groundbreaking results and make powerful impacts in their communities.
Pivoting your business is a lot of work, don’t get me wrong. But the time and effort you put into it will be so worth it in the end.
So, how can you make this shift as seamless as possible?
1 – Figure out what you want to pivot to. What’s the thing you always dreamed for yourself and your biz but never felt was within reach? That’s what needs to be your direction.
2 – Get crystal clear on your new offers (and stop charging hourly!) One of the best things you can do for yourself as you niche down is creating a comprehensive offer suite and charging per package. And for god’s sake, do away with hourly wages! When haring hourly, you will max out your time and your income eventually no matter what – which can lead to frustration and burnout.
3 – Invest back into your business. I know it can be super scary and overwhelming to think about putting money into your business, especially when you’re not making as much as you’d like to be. But, working with a mentor, investing in further education, beginning to outsource parts of your biz… these things are essential if you want to continue to scale sustainably! They have been where you currently are and have helped countless others to niche down and hit income goals! If you don’t have the funds to work with a coach or service provider on an ongoing one-on-one basis, see if they have something at a lower price point, like an intensive, VIP day, or Voxer coaching!
4 – If you aren’t already, now is the time to start doing some DEEP inner work. Being a business owner comes with so many mindset-related challenges. And you can start to question yourself and your abilities. Things you struggle with in your personal life will also affect your business. Respect yourself and your business enough to work on these things, as hard as it is.
5 – Know that your success is inevitable. This is key. I know it may sound like BS when you feel like your business is anything but successful right now – but mindset really is everything. Consciously decide to shift from “I don’t see how this will ever work for me” to “I don’t know every step to get where I want to go, but I trust in myself and my inevitable success.”
Pivoting and creating a sustainable business is a long-term game.
No one is an overnight success. Building a successful business takes lots of time, effort, investing, and outsourcing.
My story is not one in a million. There’s no secret formula to get you there. But there are specific steps to take and resources to utilize in order to successfully and seamlessly make the shift for yourself.
It is possible and within reach for you!
Go after it.
